Sydneysider's face bitten in shark attack

03 Sep, 2010 12:08 PM
A Sydney man was bitten on the head by a shark off the Solomon Islands yesterday.

The man, believed to be inner-city resident Ben D'Emden, 34, was swimming off a remote island resort when the attack occurred.

It is believed he arrived on the island on Sunday and is travelling with friends and family.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said the attack left the victim with lacerations to the face and neck.

"The man was medically evacuated to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara. He is now in a stable condition," the spokesman said.

"The Australian high commission, Honiara, is providing the man with consular assistance."

Mr D'Emden wrote on Facebook about his excitement before his holiday.

"I'm flying out to the Solomon Islands early tomorrow morning!" he wrote.

"Can't wait! I'll post some photos."
