RYE maintained its psychological edge over Red Hill on Saturday when it led all afternoon to beat the Hillmen by 33 points in their Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League Nepean Division match.
The visitors jumped the Hillmen in the opening term and opened up a 4.3 to 0.4 lead at the first change.
Although the Hillmen lifted their work rate in the second quarter, Rye was able to match the intensity, led by Adam Kirkwood at full-back, Ben Winters-Kerr and the Dunn brothers, Chris and Adam.
The home side was never close enough to cause Rye any problems as Rye cruised to a five-goal win, 11.10 (76) to 5.13 (43).
Jake Mitchell and Ben Maguiness were the best of the Hillmen.
Somerville and Tyabb went toe to toe on Saturday in the match of the day and it was the Eagles who came out winners, 16.11(107) to 11.21 (87).
It was a tight tussle and the final margin was the biggest for the afternoon.
Tyabb kicked its way out of the contest in the second quarter, booting nine behinds to Somerville's 2.4.
The Eagles' Glen Boyd proved to be the difference between the sides, kicking five goals in a best-on-ground performance, while Will Jolley with three goals, Lachlan Edwards and Geoff Hibbert were also outstanding.
When both teams needed a spark in the last quarter, it came from Somerville's Jedd Sutton, who finished with two goals.
Tyabb was very good also. Ash Waterstone got hold of everything that came his way and Craig Conlan and John Alexander won the midfield duels. Nick Waterstone proved he has a lot of senior footy ahead of him.
However, the loss ended Tyabb's season. With Rye winning, the Yabbies are one game and 10 percentage points out of the five with one round to play.
Pearcedale caused the upset of the round, beating Crib Point by 25 points.
Without Jack Besley, who was given his marching orders from the club some weeks ago, and Ricky Morris, who copped two weeks' suspension, the Panthers were able to boot 16 goals to 12 and win the game.
Kerem Baskaya was the difference with eight goals and Luke Herrington kicked six at the other end.
Frankston Bombers played with 19 men on Saturday to ensure their under-18s and reserves were all qualified for finals and bought in two blokes who hadn't played a game of footy for eight weeks in Zac White and Chris Longley.
Unfortunately for the Bombers, they came up against top-of-the-table Sorrento and went down by 61 points.
Guy Stringer and Trevor Mattison shone for the Sorras. Josh Stephenson and Troy Schwarze each booted four goals. Shaun Wilkey was the Bombers' best with three goals and Sam Drake was also outstanding.
Hastings had one of its strongest sides for the year on Saturday but it wasn't enough to beat Rosebud. The Buds dominated from early in the second quarter and recorded an 18.6 (114) to 8.11 (59) win.
Brenton Davidge kicked four and Daniel Schwind three for the Buds and Jake Ross returned from a shoulder injury and was one of the best on the ground with three goals. Adam Rose and Greg Bentley were outstanding.
Glen Michie returned for the Blues from an ankle injury and kicked three.
