Premier Cricket: Full points to Heat

24 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
FRANKSTON Peninsula has moved into third spot on the Premier Cricket ladder with an eight-wicket outright victory over Northcote at A H Butler Oval on Saturday.

After the Heat resumed at 4-86 in reply to the Dragons' 126, skipper Matt Chasemore (64) helped his team past Northcote's total before declaring at 7-172.

The Heat then dismissed Northcote for 120 in its second innings with fast bowlers Darren Groves (3-14) and Scott Boland (4-28) inflicting most of the pain. Their final total of 120 set the Heat just 75 for maximum points off 29 overs.

Sam Wiese (32 not out) and Chasemore (28 not out) guided the Heat past the total and to a rare outright victory.

"It was a good day for us," Chasemore said. "Like I said last week, the main focus for us was to get the 40 runs and then worry about getting the outright win."

Chasemore was delighted with the impact Wiese had after being a late call-up for James Miller, who was drafted into the Melbourne Stars squad for their semi-final on Saturday night.

The Heat now tackle Melbourne University at University Main Oval on Saturday. Chasemore is wary of the Students even though they are languishing on the bottom of the ladder.

"To be honest they are a really good side," he said. "They have some really good players who can take away a game in a session."

It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Heat on Saturday, and Wiese dropping Northcote skipper Jarrod Carlson was one of a few glaring fielding errors. But the Heat youngster did take a great catch to dismiss Matt Fuller.

In the seconds, Frankston Peninsula won the clash against Northcote after declaring at 8-134, a first innings lead of six runs.

Northcote then finished the day's play at 8-125 with Kyle Brooke snaring 4-51 to again put his name in front of selectors.
