THE Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association avoided relegation from the provincial division of Melbourne Country Week despite winning just one of its matches last week.
The MPCA defeated Sale-Maffra Cricket Association last Monday week on the back of a classy 90 from Rob Hearn to get its campaign off to a stellar start.
But the winning feeling was short lived as Murray Valley Cricket Association chased down the MPCA's 154 with ease on Tuesday.
The MPCA was then beaten by 106 runs at the hands of eventual premier Geelong Cricket Association, despite Hearn making 63 at the top of the order.
The team's final match on Thursday against Bendigo District Cricket Association was evenly poised before it was washed out.
MPCA team manager Paul Pelzer said it was a fighting performance from the MPCA, with many of its players inexperienced on turf wickets.
"We had a win on the Monday, which was good," he said. "We probably played the two stronger sides and then Bendigo and the game was probably in the balance.
"Overall, the boys did reasonably well and we had quite a number of first gamers. It was interesting for them to play on turf - we don't always play on turf - and we had some strong performances."
Pelzer praised the performances of youngster Justin Grant and Luke Popov. The MPCA was captained by Peninsula Old Boys star John Forrest. The team is set to remain in the top-flight division of Melbourne Country Week next year.
The MPCA fielded a second XI in division 3 of the tournament and the team won two and lost two to finish fourth.
