MPCA: Rain douses hot action

14 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE race for the finals in MPCA District Shield cricket is well and truly on after the completion of round nine on Saturday.

Two matches ended in draws after the heavy rains made it impossible for them to be completed. One of those games was the all-important clash between fourth-placed Main Ridge and sixth-placed Somerville.

The Eagles posted 333 on week one of the clash and Main Ridge had responded with 4-171 before the heavens opened. Travis Barker had top-scored to that point with 67 and Ed Aarons was out for 43. Peneeth Goonawardena with 3-54 was the pick of the Somerville bowlers.

In the other drawn game, Boneo was in a world of trouble against Frankston YCW. The Stonecats posted 8-128 on day one. Boneo was screaming out for the rain in its chase, reeling at 5-35 before play ended.

Mt Eliza had a bit of batting practice on day two of its clash against Seaford. The visitors had seven of their best players missing on Saturday due to a teammate's wedding.

Chasing 173, Seaford was bowled out for 55. Rather than go for the outright win, Mt Eliza went back in to bat and finished on 3-163.

Langwarrin staged one of the fightbacks of the season on Saturday against Delacombe Park. The Devils managed 159 in their first innings and had Langwarrin 1-10 overnight. That quickly became 3-11 and, when Shane Deal got his fourth wicket with the score at 4-25, the Kangas were in a world of trouble.

Deal tightened the screws before tea, claimed two more wickets and at the break, Langwarrin appeared finished at 6-50. David Ross (51) and 17-year-old Matt Prosser (15) then put on a 65-run partnership, giving the home side a bit of life, before both were dismissed with the score 109. With 51 needed for victory and with two wickets in hand, Mal Coutts capped off a sensational performance with an unbeaten 27.

Daniel Bray added an unbeaten 23 to his three wickets to guide the Kangaroos home with six overs to spare. Deal was superb for Delacombe, taking 6-52 off 30 overs, including 14 maidens.

Carrum hung onto third place on the ladder after a wonderful victory over Balnarring. Chasing 270, the Lions notched up 6-285, Dean Polson putting on a show with 102.

Flinders got the job done against Baden Powell, successfully chasing down 272. The Sharks went from 3-29 to 4-200. Shane Beggs was on fire again with 93, but it was Tim Clarke with 131 who stole the show.
