BAXTER has set Peninsula Old Boys a massive 301 for victory in the MPCA Provincial top-of-the-table clash.
After winning the toss and batting first, the 2009-10 premiers got away to a flyer, thanks to the hard hitting and aggression shown by gun opening bat Shane McComb.
McComb smashed a quick-fire 43 before he was the first wicket to fall with the score on 51. He lost his opening partner Darren Uccello, who retired hurt, before Adam Jones sent the dangerous Daniel Warwick packing for just four.
Trav Sawers was the next to go and the game was in the balance at 3-71. However, Ben Smith and Dale Irving were brought together at the crease and took control of the innings.
Irving was the first to go for 56, before Todd Quinn was dismissed for 33. Smith lost his stumps care of Johnny Forrest after a great knock of 93. Adam Gailitis was the pick of the Old Boys bowlers with 3-64 from 17 overs.
Sixth-placed Hastings has set 241 for victory in its match against fourth-placed Sorrento. Just four points separated these teams on the ladder coming into the clash.
The Blues were in some early trouble at 3-17, but Luke Hewitt (62) and Josh Trevitt (64) were superb at that stage of the game to regain the ascendancy.
The evergreen Timmy Birch then knocked up 53 to ensure the Blues got to a competitive total.
The wheels appear to have fallen off Long island, bowled out for 132 against Moorooduc. The Islanders currently hold down third place, a game clear of the Ducs, who are equal fourth, percentage behind Sorrento.
Mornington already has the 12 points against Ballam Park. The Knights batted first and made 111. In reply, the Doggies are 6-119.
Mt Martha is in some real strife against Crib Point. For the loser of this match, the season is finished. Mt Martha batted first and notched up 158, Ben Shorthouse topping the scoring, batting at seven with 47. In reply, the Pies are 0-38.
Rye scrambled to 9-150 against Heatherhill.
