WITH two days left before the end of the MPCA Provincial Shield home-and-away cricket season, the pace is going to be frenetic.
While it's highly likely the Peninsula Old Boys, Baxter and Mornington will all play finals, the race for fourth spot is up for grabs.
As it stands, the top seven teams are POB (86 points), Baxter (78), Mornington (74), Long Island (66), Moorooduc (66), Crib Point (60) and Sorrento (50).
The configuration of the top three is far from set.
On Saturday, Crib Point gave itself every opportunity to beat top-of-the-table POB.
Baxter is on the verge of getting an outright win over Rye. With a better percentage than POB, Baxter would go to the top of the table.
Long Island has placed itself in a strong position against Mt Martha, scoring 7-198 on a very slow outfield.
Sorrento is in a commanding position against Ballam Park and is odds-on to get an outright win. This would rocket the Sorras into contention for the four with just a one-day match to be played.
Moorooduc and Mornington are going head to head and the Ducs have the upper hand, bowling the visitors out for 160. In reply, the home side is looking the goods on 0-22.
In another exciting twist, Hastings (4-99) already has the win against Heatherhill (89) and will be searching for the outright.
The Blues are 24 points behind Ballam Park in last place after being stripped of their points. If they can pick up an outright win here, all they need to do is beat Baxter in the final game of the season to stay in Provincial.
The real interest this weekend on day two of round 10 will be whether Sorrento can pick up an outright win against the Knights.
Batting first, the Sorras declared at 8-237. In reply, the Knights are 5-50 after being at 5-17.
Crib Point's Blake Hogan-Keogh proved a thorn in the side of POB after snaring 3-29. The visitors were dismissed for 164. At one stage, the Old Boys were reeling at 5-76 before John Forrest (47) and Andrew Parsons (26) dug in.
In reply, the Pies are 1-49, opener Brad Watson taking the bowlers to the cleaners with 34 in just seven overs before he became the first and only Magpies wicket to fall.
Baxter bowled Rye out for 52 with Marc Uccello picking up six wickets and Dale Irving four. Daniel Warwick then smashed an unbeaten 81 from 27 overs to help his side to 4-146 before declaring. With 16 overs in the day to face, Rye is again on the back foot at 3-18.
