MPCA: Eagles set Mounties a tough chase

24 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
SOMERVILLE has set Mt Eliza 193 for victory in a crucial match in MPCA District Shield cricket.

Despite coming off an impressive victory against second-placed Langwarrin last week, the Eagles are still six points out of the top bracket, where there is a logjam of four teams on 54 points (Carrum, Boneo, Main Ridge and Seaford).

On two separate occasions, the Eagles had a mini collapse, losing 2-7 and 5-31 at different stages.

But 43 to opener Andrew West, 37 from keeper Craig Black and a wagging tail ensured that the home side set the ladder leader a healthy total to chase down. At one stage, the Eagles were 8-135, so to get an additional 57 for the last two wickets was impressive.

Justin Grant was the pick of the Mt Eliza bowlers with 4-49 and a couple of scalps were collected by Chris McDonough and Lyle House. The Mounties are 0-26 in reply.

Langwarrin's woes continued when it limped to 180 against fifth-placed Seaford.

The home side is still aiming for a place in the top bracket and it played with the intensity of a team that looked hungry for victory.

Again, a number of the Langwarrin top order failed, putting unnecessary pressure on the middle order. Andy Johnson and David Ross were once again the best of the bats and teenager Matt Prosser placed great value on his wicket. Seaford coach Faisal Payenda led from the front, snaring 5-63.

In the key match of third versus fourth, Dean Polson blasted an unbeaten 131 to help Carrum to a competitive total of 7-204 against Boneo.

With wickets tumbling around him, Polson looked superb, dominating the Boneo attack. The visitors will have to bat at their best next week to chase down the total.

Balnarring has set Delacombe Park 224 for victory. With the talented batting line-up of the Parkers, it should be a relatively comfortable feat this weekend on their home deck.

Baden Powell has given fifth-placed Main Ridge a lot of work to do with a score of 8-240 in their match.

Anjula Perera topped the scoring for the Braves with 58, while Rhys Elmi and Ryan Harrison each scored half centuries.

Shane Beggs continued his solid form for Flinders, top scoring with 82 against Frankston YCW. The visitors scored 7-329 and will be looking for an outright victory.
