MPCA: Carrum has task cut out after Balnarring tail wags

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
CARRUM has a lot of work to do to pick up the very valuable 12 points against Balnarring in MPCA District Shield.

The Lions are in third place on the ladder, a game clear of three teams (Main Ridge, Boneo and Seaford) while Somerville is just half a game outside of the four.

Balnarring batted first on Saturday and rattled together 269. Skipper Luke Chapple was sensational for the home side with 83 and Nick Henry contributed 53 batting at nine. The tail put on 82 for the last three wickets for Balnarring.

Jackson Fry snared 4-44 from 18 overs for Carrum and Nick Fry picked up 2-24 from 11 overs. In reply, Carrum is 1-28.

Baden Powell has set Flinders 272 for victory after Rhys Elmi smacked a career-high 151 not out. Elia Carter played a great supporting role with 53. Dwayne Field was the best of the Sharks' bowlers with 3-83.

Langwarrin appears to be in the box seat against Delacombe Park after rolling the visitors for 159.

The Parkers will be confident of knocking over the brittle Kangas batting line-up. Stuart Kranzbuhler was the best of the Parkers batsmen with 26 and Shane Deal held up his end with an unbeaten 25.

David Ross continued his outstanding season for the Kangas with 4-33 from 16 overs, Daniel Bray snared 3-17 and Mal Coutts was at his best with 2-11 from 10 overs. In reply, Langwarrin is 1-10.

Boneo will be looking for an early afternoon this Saturday after restricting Frankston YCW to 8-128. It was certainly a case of occupying the crease for the Stonecats, batting their full 75 overs, scoring at just 1.7 runs an over.

Despite key players missing from Seaford's line-up, it still managed to bowl out Mt Eliza for 173 on Saturday.

The top order failed for the Mounties, but Justin Grant continued his sensational season with an unbeaten 55 and Matt O'Brien scored 54. The total, albeit not big, will be more than enough for the ladder leaders, who already have the opposition reeling at 2-14.

Somerville is in the box seat to knock off fourth-placed Main Ridge after scoring 333 on Saturday. Sam Delaney scored 89 and Brenton Alp 76 to help the Eagles to the big total. Mitch Wilson was the best of the Ridge bowlers with 5-51 and Gareth Wyatt opened the bowling with 3-80.
