Braves face a big run chase

09 Feb, 2010 09:35 AM
THE battle between second- and third-placed Flinders and Baden Powell should be a beauty after day one of MPCA Sub-District cricket.

Flinders won the toss on Saturday and elected to bat, putting on 7-258.

A number of players got starts for the glamour team of the competition, Mark Maddock unbeaten on 67, Shane Beggs continuing his outstanding form on 66, Andrew McKillop helping himself to a half century, and one of the best in the business, Simon Parrott, getting 45.

John Harrison toiled hard for the Braves and was rewarded with 4-67.

Flinders has an outstanding bowling attack and the Braves will be hard pressed to get the 259 for victory.

Skye is in all sorts of trouble and could lose top spot against Tootgarook, which is desperately trying to regain a spot in the four.

Things didn't start well for the home side, the Tooters being bundled out for just 97. Matt Whelan with 33 was the pick of the bats.

Skye's bowlers were superb, Scott Clark snaring 6-38 and Dean Polson just as good with 4-30.

However, the Skye bats couldn't back up their bowlers, struggling at stumps on 4-47. Matt Whelan was able to back up his cameo with the bat to claim 2-29 with the pill.

When Seaford Tigers finished batting on Saturday against Pearcedale, they would have been forgiven for thinking they had just cost themselves the season. The Tigers were bowled out for 94, Jarryd Herbert dominant for the Dales with 5-27 and Kaine Smith dominant with 2-0. Glen Corrigan top-scored with 25.

Pearcedale, on the same points as the Tigers (and Tootgarook) and with a spot in the four at stake, just needed to bat with patience and sensibility and the 12 points would be theirs.

Wrong! The Dales crumbled like a fresh lamington to be 5-27 at stumps. Matthew Collins was given his first senior game for the season and responded with 3-14 off 10 overs. The Tigers are in the box seat to win the seemingly unwinnable.

Rosebud has Carrum Downs in more trouble than the early settlers. The Buds batted first and made 9-218 before having a few overs at the Cougars late in the day. The Cougars were 6-59 at stumps and have no chance of causing an upset.
