Young yachties show finesse

02 Mar, 2010 12:54 PM

FAMOUS Mornington Peninsula yachting family names were well represented at the annual Lidgett Trophy held at Davey's Bay Yacht Club last Sunday week.

The regatta is the biggest junior event on Port Phillip and attracts yachties from clubs around the bay including Geelong, Albert Park, Brighton, Sandringham and most clubs on the peninsula.

More than 170 under-16s raced their Sabot, Minnow and Optimist class dinghies at the 11th annual event including Tom and Emma Lidgett, whose family the regatta is named after, and Ollie and Lachie Wharington, sons of Mornington sailor Grant Wharington of supermaxi Wild Thing fame.

Andrew Meldrum of the club said the regatta during the club's 100th year was a great event.

"We had to cancel Saturday due to the high wind, but Sunday was near perfect. We had coaching in the morning and racing after lunch, including one for kids who had never raced," he said.

Club commodore Jeni Danks (nee Lidgett) said the regatta was the No.1 training event for up and coming yachties or youngsters giving sailing a go.

"For 11 years, this weekend has been the place to go for a fun weekend of sailing with coaching by some of the best in the game, including Olympic and national champions," she said.

"This year, we reduced the list of invited classes to three, reinforcing our philosophy of providing fun training and racing for our most junior classes.

"As well as great sailing, the event is an opportunity for kids to play and socialise, hopefully forging lifelong friendships."

The club also christened a new committee boat, the Arthur Peck, donated by member Nigel Peck, the grandson of the club's founder.

Arthur Peck was one of the most famous Port Phillip sailors of his era and a member of Brighton, Sandringham and Royal Melbourne yacht clubs.

The youth sail training ship Young Endeavour was supposed to be a feature of the regatta, but sustained minor damage during a trip on Port Phillip and headed back to Melbourne for repairs before leaving for Hobart last Tuesday.

Davey's Bay is planning to demolish the junior clubhouse and build a training centre adjoining the main clubhouse.
