Athletes qualify for junior world titles

TWO Frankston Athletics Club members have qualified for the IAAF world junior championships after outstanding performances at the Briggs Athletics Classic in Hobart on Saturday night.

The meeting, which forms part of the 2012 National Athletics Series, was highlighted for the Frankston athletes by Jarryd Buchan recording 47.27 sec in the 400m and Luke McCann's throw of 69.89 metres in the javelin.

Dale Stevenson finished second in the shot put with a throw of 19.42 metres and Nathan McConchie finished fifth in the 400 metre hurdle with a time of 55.81 seconds.

■ Frankston Athletics Club made a strong impression in the final two rounds of the Summer Shield competition held on Tuesday and Saturday nights.

On a blustery Tuesday night at Albert Park, Ryan Bedford recorded a stellar time of 22.94 seconds in the under-18 men's 200-metre race. Sarah Buchanan won the ladies' equivalent.

On Saturday night, in the last round before the shield final, Simon Grieg took out the division 2 men's open 100m event in a quick time of 10.7 seconds. Ryan Bedford won the U18 event in a time of 11.24 sec.

The final of the Athletics Victoria Summer Shield competition will be held this Saturday at Lakeside Stadium Albert Park.
