THERE'S 60 years between them, but Frankston City's Australia Day winners share a love of helping others.
Gwen Dearsley was named 2012 citizen of the year at an Australia Day ceremony and Kimberly Pellosis is young citizen of the year.
Mrs Dearsley, 82, is a familiar sight around Frankston. She belongs to several committees and is a long-standing volunteer for Frankston's aged-care services.
The tireless volunteer said she still couldn't believe she had won the award. "It's been hard not telling friends before the official announcement," Mrs Dearsley laughed.
"I recommend volunteering. There's so many places in Frankston to help out including opportunity shops, Meals on Wheels and the Pink Ladies [at Frankston Hospital].
"Even if you only volunteer for two or three hours a week it gets you out of the house and you get to meet people."
Kimberly Pellosis' main passions are the environment and sustainability and the 18 year old's many roles include being Frankston High School's environmental committee leader.
She has motivated and inspired students within the school and the wider community to implement sustainability and environmental programs and initiatives. Kimberly said she was surprised but thankful to receive the honour.
The pair each received a certificate and will be involved in a range of Frankston City projects and events throughout the year.
Mayor Brian Cunial said: "Australia Day is a time when we honour people who demonstrate the diversity and depth of personal achievement.''
''Gwen Dearsley and Kimberly Pellosis are two extraordinary women who epitomise what living in Frankston City is all about."
