JENNY Beard loves making outfits so much she has spent the past 15 years creating stunning ensembles for herself, her daughters Katie and Laurie and Candice and son Josh to wear to the races.
The Langwarrin family have always been around horses, with the girls growing up in pony clubs and competing in horse shows.
"From the time we were young, mum made all our riding outfits but when we decided we didn't want to do riding shows any more, mum took her hand to fashion pieces," said Katie, who is now the forewoman for a racing stable in Rosebud.
"Mum was the first to enter a fashions on the field and won a prize so she then convinced me to go one at the Cranbourne races. I was so nervous, but we all kept doing quite well so we persevered and now have all entered competitions at different times over the years."
Jenny's passion for millinery and fashion began after her niece returned from London where she had been working for a milliner.
"She would be sitting down making hats and I thought it didn't look that hard to do," Jenny said. "I've always loved sewing, and this is just like making riding outfits for the girls when they were little, only a bit more glamorous."
Jenny works as an industrial cleaner, so fashions on the field competitions are a far cry from her day job. She was well-advanced on whipping up her outfit for tomorrow's Mornington Cup fashion competitions when the Weekly dropped by.
"The Mornington races are the first one I entered and it's always been the one I have wanted to win," she said.
Due to other commitments, the family don't always compete at the same events. "This year, it will probably be Laurie and myself at Mornington, but even Josh has taken part in fashions on the field. I made him a suit for one Mornington Cup and he won the best male section."
Jenny's advice when choosing an outfit is to go with your own style. "I never follow a trend. I tend not to listen too much and go with my own heart and feeling. Sometimes, an outfit will start with a bracelet, or a shoe or a glove.
"Whatever you have on has to be quite spectacular but it is the accessories that top off the outfit. It's not that different to the horse show ring really.
"You need to have that 'look at me' appeal. It's how you put it together with your own twist and wear it with confidence."
