THE government has announced extra off-peak train services on the Frankston line and the extension of Frankston-Ringwood
SmartBus to Melbourne Airport.
A new train timetable to come into effect on October 10 will have off-peak services upgraded to a frequency of every 10 minutes from 9am-4.30pm, an improvement from the current 15-minute frequency.
Frankston MP Alistair Harkness said the new timetable would have a total 29 additional services every weekday and make off-peak services on the Frankston line equal to the best in Melbourne. There would also be a new 20-minute frequency after the afternoon peak, between 7-10pm on weekdays.
In June, Metro increased peak time capacity on the Frankston line by 17per cent.
Transport Minister Martin Pakula said this had seen the number of services from 7.30-9.30am exceeding 798 passengers remaining at four. Between 3.30pm and 7pm the number of trains carrying 798 passengers dropped from six to one.
Mr Pakula said that from Sunday, September 26, the SmartBus route 901 would run all the way from Frankston to Melbourne Airport - via Dandenong, Ringwood, Blackburn, Doncaster East, Templestowe, Greensborough, South Morang, Epping, Roxburgh Park and Broadmeadows.
The service runs seven days a week, with a bus on average every 15 minutes until 9pm on weekdays and every 30 minutes at other times. Travel on the SmartBus is free from Monday, October 4 to Sunday, October 17.
