FRANKSTON policewoman Pam Randall is getting ready to strap on her running shoes and compete against emergency services personnel in New York next year.
But to get to the 2011 World Police and Fire Games, she is seeking the support of local businesses.
"I'm organising a fund-raiser in January and would really appreciate goods or vouchers. Telstra has already been wonderful and donated some phones," said Senior Constable Randall, a member of the sex offence and child abuse investigation team.
The Olympics-style games will coincide with events to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attack on the city. Up to 20,000 full-time firefighters and law enforcement officers from 70 countries are expected to compete in 65 sports.
Senior Constable Randall will be competing in a 10-kilometre cross country event on August 29.
A life-long runner, Senior Constable Randall recently recovered from plantar fasciitis, a condition that causes heel and arch pain and is ironically known as 'policeman's heel'. Her husband Barry Randall, stationed at the Dandenong police station, will be battling it out on the rugby field as a fellow games competitor the same day she competes.
"He's been told his venue is Randall Island so we see this as a good omen," she laughed.
