RESIDENTS can help spread the message about organ donation by joining a walk in Frankston tomorrow.
The inaugural DonateLife Walk for Life starts at the Frankston Lifesaving Club at 9.30am and ends with a barbecue at the foreshore in front of Frankston pier.
Participants include DonateLife peninsula volunteer Twanny Farrugia, who had a kidney transplant in 1972, and liver transplant recipient Mary Bawden of Frankston.
Cowra resident David Gough, who will also be there, is on his annual bike ride around Australia to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation.
His daughter Melody died in a car accident at the age of 26 and her donated organs saved the lives of three critically ill people.
"This event is a fantastic opportunity to promote the life-changing benefits of organ donation to the community," says Jodi Vuat, a senior nurse for organ and tissue donation at Peninsula Health.
"One organ donor can save the lives of up to 10 others - and with 1700 Australians waiting for a transplant it's vital that people discover the facts about donation, decide whether to be a donor, and then discuss it with their loved ones."
