New Karingal hub a first

09 Feb, 2010 09:49 AM
THE $6.1million education, child care and community services hub Karingal PLACE was officially opened at its Karingal Primary School site on Friday by Community Development Minister Lily D'Ambrosio.

The centre will house a kindergarten, maternal and child health services, three prep classrooms, a neighbourhood house and occasional child care as well as internet-equipped community rooms and a kiosk.

The name PLACE is an acronym for 'people, learning, activities, community and education' and was jointly funded by the State Government and Frankston Council.

Frankston MP Alistair Harkness said the concept of locating a range of services in the one centre would help strengthen the Karingal community.

"Being able to support local mums and dads as their children move through the key years from birth to primary school with services located in the same precinct is so important," Mr Harkness said.

"It will give children and families a feeling of security and familiarity that will help build relationships and confidence."

Frankston Mayor Christine Richards said that by having a range of services located in a cluster, more people were likely to use them. "Having so many important services under one roof means that families in Karingal are far more likely to use these services, leading to improvements in health, education and social connection."

Karingal PLACE is understood to be the first such centre in Victoria and is being touted by the two tiers of government as providing a model for other centres.

"I don't think there is much doubt that councils and communities from right around Victoria will be looking at this model when deciding how best to provide services for their families," Cr Richards said.

Karingal PLACE is open from Monday to Friday. For more information or to book the hall or a meeting room, call Sonia McCann on 87866651.
