'Moccasin mob' image cops serve

09 Mar, 2010 11:53 AM
A WAR of words has broken out between two former Frankston mayors over the direction being taken by Frankston Council and the current mayor, Christine Richards.

Cr Colin Hampton has accused Cr Glenn Aitken of being obstructionist and of impeding the efforts of the council to make Frankston a more appealing place to live, work and visit.

Cr Hampton said he was concerned about recent comments made by Cr Aitken in the chamber and in the press about Cr Richards and council issues.

"It is tantamount to bullying, in my opinion," Cr Hampton said.

He also claimed Cr Aitken's absence from briefings meant he was not adequately representing his constituents and he was stifling efforts to improve Frankston's image.

"Previous councils were labelled 'the moccasin mob', and Cr Aitken was up to his neck in it, and this council is trying to repair this image.

"I have served this city for the past 10 years and I can honestly say it is the best council I've ever served on and it is focused on the liveability and image of the city.

"Cr Aitken loves to be the centre of attention and this is not helpful."

Cr Aitken rejected the criticism and said he made no apologies for being "an independent voice on a council consumed by a pack mentality, following Cr Richards blindly like she is an oracle of wisdom".

"Cr Hampton is trying to create a myth that I'm some sort of troublemaker. He has just fallen back to his blustering and bullying ways.

"The meetings are really now just huddles that produce homogeneous reactions and responses.

"This is the worst council I've ever seen and if Cr Hampton stood back and analysed it a bit more he'd see they have made a series of horrific blunders."

Despite the clash, the pair agree on one thing: the council is in danger of blowing the budget with costly proposals, including almost $1million for a private security guard trial.

Cr Hampton last week told his colleagues they must reduce spending, the same warning Cr Aitken has been issuing for the past six months.
