Karingal prepares for broadband

21 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
KARINGAL is one of three Melbourne suburbs to be earmarked for the federal government's national broadband network.

In the first quarterly report update to its roll out plan, NBN Co, the company established to construct and operate the NBN, announced last week that 8700 homes, businesses and schools in Karingal would have access to the superfast internet network.

Works for the fibre roll out are due to start in Karingal towards the end of the year. Keysbororough and Footscray were the other two suburbs added to the list.

Victorian senator Jacinta Collins said: "The NBN is a substantial investment for Australia's future and I am pleased that Karingal is one of the first suburbs in the south-east of Melbourne to be connected to it.

"The NBN will provide access to high-speed broadband to 100 per cent of Australian premises. The federal Labor Government will ensure that every home, school, hospital and business have access to high-speed broadband via the NBN, ensuring no one misses out."
