WHAT DO YOU THINK? SCROLL TO BELOW THIS STORY TO POST A COMMENT.KANANOOK Creek Association president Rob Thurley is hoping a letter from Planning Minister Matthew Guy will end years of confusion about who is responsible for desilting and promoting recreational activities on the waterway.
In the letter received last month, Mr Guy told the association he was responding on behalf of Premier Ted Baillieu who had determined that responsibility for disilting the creek lay within the portfolio of Environment and Climate Change Minister Ryan Smith.
The Kananook Creek corridor is managed by the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Parks Victoria, Frankston Council and Melbourne Water.
Mr Thurley said handing control of the creek over to Parks Victoria, which answers to Mr Smith, seemed the most practical solution.
"It would be wonderful if it went to Parks. Parks Victoria manage Melbourne's metropolitan parks, as well as the Lower Yarra, Maribynong and Patterson rivers," he said, adding that Kananook Creek was "choking" on silt and 130 mooring places had been lost.
He said Parks had the funding, manpower and experience to desilt the creek, restore boat moorings and create a vibrant precinct in the town centre.
The 10-kilometre creek corridor provided "a brilliant opportunity" for recreation as it comprised council reserves, highly visible town centres and 480 private landowners.
"We have finally moved away from automatically holding Melbourne Water accountable for matters which are clearly outside their revised charter," Mr Thurley said. "The role and contribution of the council is also crucial to achieving a quality outcome.
"The council has a responsibility for community leadership. Strong, clear and consistent advocacy is needed as well as a fair financial contribution, similar to Kingston Council at Mordialloc Creek."
