FRANKSTON student Andrew Thomson is a green warrior with a social conscience.
The captain at Frankston High School has a hectic roster of activities at the school and in the community.
So much so that his principal Helen Wilson has nominated him for a Star Zone Walk of Fame Local Legends Award.
Andrew has been a member of the school's leadership council for five years, completing an endless amount of work for the environment.
He took part in four national tree planting days and fund-raising events for Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd, taking his passion for all things environmental to a United Nations Youth Association leadership conference at Parliament House.
Sustainability workshops he conducted for pupils were instrumental in ensuring Frankston High won second place in school project awards presented by the Order of Australia Association (Mornington Peninsula Regional Group).
"The workshops were to teach students how we can better manage waste and improve our water and energy consumption," he said.
Last year, Andrew initiated a cyber-bullying awareness program at his school, organising a policeman formerly with the cyber crime unit to speak to students. The program was particularly aimed at students in year 7.
"They are just entering secondary school, so they're getting into social networking sites and we can address any problems early."
His aim is to study environmental science and environmental engineering at university.
Besides school activities, Andrew is also a member of the Frankston Life Saving Club and the Portsea Surf Life Saving Club. "In his role as a lifesaver he has helped rescue many swimmers," Ms Wilson said.
She said this role combined Andrew's love for the environment and his interest in community service.
