All welcome at Japan festival

21 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
FRANKSTON is running a Japanese festival to honour a visiting delegation - and everyone's welcome to join the fun.

Kananook Creek Boulevard will be the setting on Saturday for the festival, which celebrates Frankston's 30-year relationship with its sister city Susono.

"We are extremely excited to welcome the delegation from Susono to Frankston and what better way to celebrate than to showcase its culture," Frankston mayor Brian Cunial said.

"This is another example of Frankston's willingness to embrace other cultures and we ask everyone to enjoy what will be a fabulous day."

Festival activities will include Japanese performers displaying taiko drumming, Japanese dancing and martial arts skills.

Japanese flower arranging, origami, kite making and flying, shiatsu massage, bonsai and exquisite Japanese cuisine will be featured.

Pupils from many local schools, including Derinya primary, are preparing traditional Japanese kites and a festival float.

The festival will be at Kananook Creek Boulevard, between Wells and Playne streets, Frankston from 11am-5pm.

■ Kite lovers can enjoy the Rosebud Kite Festival on the weekend of March 10-11.

Now in its ninth year, the festival has grown to become Victoria's largest festival of its kind and attracts thousands of visitors. Adding to the fun will be a packed program of family entertainment, live music, roving performers and kite-related activities.

There'll be giant soft kite displays, a kite-flying arena, kite-making workshops, and if weather permits, a kite surfing display. There will be a solo appearance by an RAAF Roulette.

The festival will be held on the foreshore at Jetty Road, Rosebud. Patrons can meet the international kite makers on the Saturday from 10am-noon and enjoy the kite activities and family entertainment on Sunday between 11am-5pm.
